My Genealogical Journey

 

In 1997, I was bitten by the family history bug when my uncles, Josephus Hicks, and Lovant Hicks, III, shared our family history research with me. Initially, I was captivated by the people who shared my last name. This curiosity grew as I became intrigued by their origins, leading me to trace my paternal and maternal lines. Now, I’m hooked, and my passion extends to helping others discover their family stories!

Having unearthed my family’s story, my mission is to empower others to find theirs. A significant part of American history is deeply rooted in African American culture, yet our education often provides a limited and sometimes inaccurate account of it. By researching our own stories, truths, and legacies, we honor our ancestors—our personal heroes and heroines—and contribute to the collective histories of Black Americans.

Being a genealogist is a fulfilling journey that combines helping others with the continuous expansion of my knowledge. It also means diving into the mysteries of my own family’s past. Each project presents its challenges, but the rewards are immeasurable. Together, through collaboration and ongoing learning, we can uncover remarkable stories and forge meaningful connections that deepen our understanding of history.
